Statement on recent social media attacks against the Welsh Refugee Council

“Wales welcomed us with open arms, providing the safety we were searching for.”
This comment from a staff member at the Welsh Refugee Council (WRC) sums up the charity’s work, supporting people facing situations and fears that many of us will, thankfully, never have to go through.
We are deeply saddened to see the enthusiasm of a group of schoolchildren be turned into a misleading attack, motivated not by truth but by political agendas. All of us with any form of public platform have a duty to the truth, and to be responsible with how we use the voice afforded to us. The recent attacks on the WRC have not fulfilled that duty.
We stand in support of the WRC, and of their work to make Wales a welcoming place for those who find themselves without safety, shelter, or anywhere to call their home. The WRC contributed to the recent report, A Heart of Help, that we produced alongside our partners – the stories contained within speak to the reality of the situations experienced by the people the WRC support.
Misinformation has no place in Welsh culture, life or politics, and it is up to all of us to ensure that it does not find one.
We would like to thank the WCVA, The Wallich, and all others who have spoken out in support of the WRC.
